The Coolest Restaurant in Mauritius
As you do when you work as a travel advisor, I was looking for something interesting while in Mauritius — but this time, the credit goes to my amazing friend Alice, who I’m travelling with (and who also happens to work in the travel industry). She’s the one who found this absolute hidden gem.
At first glance on Google Maps, it honestly looks like a glitch. The restaurant is in the middle of the ocean. Literally. And the way to get there? A little private boat charter.
As you step off the boat, the chef himself greets you — and in true Mauritian style, it’s friendly, relaxed, and very far from formal. He even told us his favourite cocktail, and although neither of us usually drink, we had to try it. It was rum-based, sweet with a spicy twist — somehow the perfect summary of Mauritius in a glass.
We sat there watching the sun go down over the ocean, our little floating restaurant gently swaying, and ordered our starters — salted fish rolls to share. Perfect. Then came the main course: the catch of the day, tuna, cooked medium rare. Fresh, simple, and exactly what you hope for when you eat by the water.
Some fish were literally playing under our table as we talked through future Beyond Trails & Tales plans— I’ll be heading off soon for some travel research in pretty remote places (spoiler: you’ll soon be able to experience them, not just read about them).
As the waves gently rocked the restaurant and fish darted beneath our feet, the question you’re probably wondering about came up — how much did all this cost? For such an unforgettable experience, we each paid €30.
As always, I went incognito - no sponsorships, no collaborations — just genuine discovery, and a reminder that sometimes, magic hides in the most unexpected places. If you ever find yourself in Mauritius, this is your sign to not miss Moon Bar’k!
