A Goodbye to Mauritius
Mauritius has completely blown me away! We had the absolute best second week here. We went on an incredible adventure, looking for sperm whales in the Indian Ocean — and made memories of a lifetime. It was also very useful for travel research, as I’ll be leading two group adventures to the Kingdom of Tonga next year, where we’ll swim with humpback whales.
But back to Mauritius. We visited a sugarcane factory, where we learned so much about the island and how a single plant shaped the history of this nation. We also discovered why its wonderfully diverse people stand together in everything — despite having different religions and customs.
We went on a road trip, chasing sunsets, mountains, and incredible views! After stopping at an Indian restaurant for an amazing dinner, we headed to the beach for some snorkelling — and the corals did not disappoint.
And I cannot say this enough: Mauritians are among the kindest and most helpful people I have ever met. They approach you with such warmth and a genuine willingness to help — without expecting anything in return.
To be honest, Mauritius wasn’t even on my radar, but I’m so glad I went anyway! I can’t wait to return to this incredible island nation.
