Define Lost: My First Chapter in Mauritius
Mauritius is exceeding every single expectation I had — and that’s saying something. This island is beyond beautiful. The water is so clear it feels almost unreal, and the colours seem to have their own filters straight from nature. The southwest, especially around Le Morne, completely stole my heart. I hiked the mountain a few days ago, and I don’t say this lightly — the views from up there are among the most breathtaking I’ve seen anywhere in the world.
And then there are the people. Truly, the kindest souls I’ve ever met. They help you simply because they want to — no hidden motives, no expectations. Just genuine kindness. It’s something that completely changes the rhythm of your days here.
On a more personal note (and as any of you who know me might guess), I’ve been exploring the local coffee scene — and it’s surprisingly fantastic. I’ve found a few cafés that could easily compete with those in Lisbon or Budapest. And yes, a strong cappuccino at 10 p.m. absolutely helps when you’re writing blog posts like this one.
Naturally, I’ve also been in full research mode — testing routes, cafés, and activities so that when one of you decides to come to Mauritius, you’ll experience the best of the island without wasting a single moment on things that don’t truly matter.
In the coming days, I’ll be heading out for a whale excursion, diving into the surf scene (quite literally), hiking a bit more, and going scuba diving — because apparently, I can’t sit still for too long.
For anyone wondering about safety — I feel completely safe here, even walking after dark. The roads, despite the left-side driving and right-hand steering, are surprisingly easy to navigate. Drivers here are patient, careful, and far less chaotic than in many other parts of the world — a very welcome surprise.
So far, Mauritius feels like a place that quietly wraps you in calm while still offering endless adventure. I’ll report back soon with more hidden corners, impressions, and stories from this island that keeps on surprising me.
Until then —
Define Lost, and keep exploring.
