Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival

After arrival to Kilimanjaro Airport your Tour Host and local guide will be waiting for you, transporting you to Banana Farm Eco Hostel where we’ll sepnd the night. If your flight arrives earlier, you’ll have the chance to explore and learn about the Banana Farm in a guided tour where we’ll be staying. (Dinner included)

Day 2 – The safari adventure begins

After breakfast, we leave Arusha behind and head towards Tarangire National Park for the first day of our safari experience with our local guide.Tarangire is particularly known for its huge baobab trees and large elephant population, but the park is also home to giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, antelope, with predators including lions and leopards also present. Keep your eyes peeled – you never know what the bush will bring!

We’ll spend the day exploring the park by 4x4, stopping for a picnic lunch along the way and getting our first taste of life on safari.

We’ll then head to our camp for dinner and our first night in the bush. The camp is an enclosed area, designated to camping, with dedicated security. Enjoy the sounds of the bush as you sleep and ready yourselves for tomorrow’s adventure! (B, L, D)

Days 3 – Into the Wild

Waking up in the bush is something truly exceptional. Enjoy the morning light and birdsong as we enjoy breakfast together before we journey towards one of Africa’s most legendary landscapes: Serengeti National Park.

The drive itself forms part of the adventure as the scenery changes and we travel deeper into northern Tanzania’s wilderness. After entering the Serengeti, we’ll enjoy lunch together before exploring the park with an afternoon game drive.

February falls within the wider wildebeest calving season, when enormous numbers of wildebeest gather across the southern Serengeti ecosystem and thousands of calves are born.

This abundance of young animals can also attract predators, making this an especially fascinating time to be in the region. Exactly where the herds are found is dictated by nature and can’t be guaranteed.

We’ll arrive at our camp in time to settle in and enjoy dinner together. If the skies are clear, the stars are spectacular from camp with the Milky Way being clearly visible – the Serengeti offers some of the best stargazing in the world as there’s virtually no light pollution. (B, L, D)

Day 4 – Endless Serengeti

A full day is dedicated to exploring the Serengeti. After breakfast we’ll set out in the 4x4 in search of wildlife, allowing the day’s route to respond to conditions and sightings and giving our expert guide the chance to show us his tracking skills in the area.

Alongside the famous wildebeest herds, the Serengeti supports lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, giraffes, zebra, hippos and countless other species. We’ll be on the lookout for whatever we are lucky enough to find!

We’ll enjoy lunch somewhere along the way. After a full day in the park, we’ll return to camp for dinner together before another night under the stars. (B, L, D)

Days 5 – Into the Crater | Ngorongoro

After breakfast, we'll leave the Serengeti and continue towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The centrepiece of the day is the Ngorongoro Crater, a vast volcanic caldera with an extraordinary concentration of wildlife. We'll descend to the crater floor for a game drive, exploring its grasslands, woodland and wetlands.

The crater supports an incredible variety of wildlife, including zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, hippos, elephants and large predators, and it is also one of the places in Tanzania where you may be fortunate enough to see the critically endangered black rhino.

After our crater safari, we'll continue to our next camp where we’ll enjoy dinner together and one last sleep under the stars.

If we’re lucky, we may even be visited by the resident zebras who frequent the camp! (B, L, D)

Our final full day takes us into the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro to visit Materuni. After a later start and breakfast at the hotel, we’ll drive to Materuni where we'll walk through the lush landscape to Materuni Waterfall, a dramatic waterfall surrounded by green vegetation and mountain scenery. Bring your swimsuits as there will be an opportunity to refresh in the water, if the weather is favourable.

We'll also discover another important part of life in this region: coffee. We’ll visit a local coffee farm where we'll learn about the traditional process of taking coffee from bean to cup and gain an insight into its importance to the local Chagga community.

A traditional Chagga lunch is included.

Afterwards, we'll return to Moshi for our final evening and dinner together on the mainland. (B, L, D)

After breakfast at the hotel, if you are joining us on the Zanzibar trip extension we will head straight to Arusha airport for our flight to the beautiful Spice Islands.

If today will be your final day with us, you may choose an optional excursion with a local guide. The nearby Chemka hot springs can be visited en route to the airport for an additional cost of 60usd, with lunch included. Please let us know if you’d like for us to organise anything for your final day. (B)

Day 6 – Life Beyond the Safari

Day 7 – Waterfalls & Coffee

Day 8 – Final day in Tanganyika

After breakfast this morning, we’ll drive to Karatu where we’ll swap the 4x4 for bicycles and enjoy a cultural guided bicycle tour of the Mto wa Mbu area, exploring its villages, communities and local farms.

After the cycling experience and lunch, we'll continue towards Moshi, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro.

We'll settle into our accommodation and enjoy dinner before a well-deserved rest. (B, L, D)

Meet your tour host: Patricia

Dear Traveller! I’m Patricia, founder of Beyond Trails & Tales. Travelling was always my biggest passion, which not so slowly turned into my profession. From a young age I always liked to guide my friends and family through different destinations. When leading a trip I always thrive to ensure everyone is feeling safe and most of all, are enjoying themselves. I’m always up for a talk, exchanging funny stories - and I usually don’t hold back with my crazy side. You’ll definitely see me jumping from the top of the boat:) I’m also always up for a fun sidequest - I’m more than happy to watch the sunrise with you, and organize any last-minute idea you might have - like a lunch with a local family in Tonga which happened to be one of the requests I got the last time. (We had heaps of fun even though we didn’t understand a word).
