What’s the story behind Beyond Trails & Tales? - Founder series
Well, the original idea was to help organize people their holidays – as there is way too much information online – and since I already travelled 6 months out of the year at that point, so many people started asking me for advice.
I still worked in a restaurant on the Canary Islands, 60+ hours a week at that point – but in my free time I quietly started building a website and gathering legal information – and began operating as a travel advisor under another legal business in Hungary – while continuing my previous strategy – working in a restaurant for 3 months – saving up all my money, and hard-core budget travelling for 1-3 months. While travelling in China, Türkiye and Kyrgyzstan, more ideas arose – mainly to start organizing group trips, as there are so many places in this beautiful world where solo travelling, or even travelling with friends/family is difficult, or comes with many compromises. While I was happy to go to Kyrgyzstan with no plans whatsoever and hitchhike my way through and wing every day… I knew that it was first, a bit more dangerous than necessary, second, not many people would do it even though it’s such an incredible country.
That idea was followed by even more legal research, and the sad realization that as an independent travel advisor there was absolutely no way to legally organize a group adventure without collaborating with a company, and I knew I didn’t want that.
For a couple months afterwards, I worked 6-7 days a week at the restaurant, and spent almost all my free time making Beyond Trails & Tales work with the legal hurdles I was facing. After a hard day at my own (not yet legal) company, and 10 hours at the restaurant – I quit my restaurant job on the spot – which was a bit shocking to me as well – but ultimately, I knew it was coming, and I guess I needed the final push of a very stressful day at hospitality.
So, as every sane person would at 3 am, being a bit too emotional, I started to dig deeper, and fairly quickly made the decision to actually open a travel agency, being 24 years old – to provide legal background for the group trips. But first, I had another big travel scheduled to Mauritius, Tanzania and Madagascar, and I spent almost its entirety hustling, while obviously enjoying myself, and making future plans in my head. The trip was unfortunately cut short because of political reasons (aka a civil war almost breaking out).
Since I was home early, I had to resort to my parents’ house in Budapest. Which worked out surprisingly perfectly, as I finally was able to start preparing actually building a company on the ideas, as I knew Hungary would be an easier place to start a legal business for me than Spain – where I lived at the time.
Seven months later, Beyond Trails and Tales Travel Agency has three employees, and 12 group trips planned for 2027, and two more coming up in August of 2026 – the ultimate bucket list trip – swimming with humpback whales in the Kingdom of Tonga.
Since it’s a we now, we’ll continue building and growing – with only one goal – making sure you make unforgettable memories.
