The Unfiltered Travel Hacks I Learned Living Out of a 40L Backpack
I spent more time on the road than at home in the past two years – most of it solo – and there are definitely a lot of hacks I have learned in the meantime…
When buying flight tickets – I always make sure to not immediately accept “luggage deals” – as there is usually a cheaper option further down on the airline’s website (for the same sized luggage!)
When travelling with budget airlines – I always board last when I know they are strict with luggage sizes – even when I’m certain that my carry-on fits into their measurements. If you walk up confidently, and at final call – they won’t mess with you due to time restraints.
I also always travel with a water bottle – which you absolutely can bring through security – if it’s empty. 90% of airports have free refilling stations – you don’t have to buy super expensive water.
As I’m often sitting on long-haul flights, a neck pillow comes in very handy – especially that I only use its cover, and stuff my clothes inside it – gaining extra packing space – which comes incredibly handy, as I only travel with a 40-litre backpack – yes, everywhere I go.
As a solo female traveller, there are obviously certain safety issues I have to be concerned with. I always carry my valuables in a fanny pack (bum bag) which I keep across my chest – at all times.
Since I have to navigate on my own in cities – the most useful thing I have with me is a string for my phone case. I actually have two different kinds – one which attaches to my wrist – and another one which can go across my body – and it is perfect against pickpockets, as they cannot snitch the phone from my hand.
I always make sure to have smaller notes with me in the local currency – to pay for taxis and tuk-tuks – as they tend to scam tourists, saying that they don’t have change with them, or intentionally charging more when you pay with card. Before getting into any taxi or tuktuk I ask for the final price as well – and if anyone asks, I always say that I’m just going to meet some friends – I never ever say that I’m travelling solo.
When planning my itinerary, I use so many hacks I have learned over the years, of planning my own travels, and organizing other people’s adventures. As every single trip is different, my methods vary as well.
How I usually start is literally browsing through Google Maps – once I have my destination. I like to have a whole idea of the country/area/city that I’m going to. I love using the “saved places” feature on Google Maps as well.
This blogpost would turn into a novel if I would try to write down my whole process – but the truth is, every trip is different anyway. And that’s exactly why I love helping others plan their own adventures! If you feel like you want to be the one to plan your trip – but could use some help on the how exactly, you’re at the right place.
I can teach you everything from:

But most importantly, how to make the most of your time.
